Tom Plunkett, Chief Data Officer
Tom Plunkett is the lead author of the Oracle Big Data Handbook and several other books. Tom is a principal consultant with Oracle and also teaches graduate-level computer science courses for Virginia Tech. Tom has given presentations on Big Data at over forty conferences. Prior to joining Oracle, Tom practiced patent law with Fliesler Meyer in San Francisco, representing Oracle and other Silicon Valley companies. Tom has a B.A. and J.D. from George Mason University, an M.S. in Computer Science from Virginia Tech.
In 2009, Tom led a team that won a Big Data research project for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In 2010, Tom co-taught one of the first graduate level computer science courses that covered Big Data. In 2012, he helped the National Cancer Institute win several awards for a Big Data project that analyzed cancer-genome relationships, including the 2012 Government Big Data Solutions Award (best government big data project out of over eighty competing projects), 2013 Excellence.Gov finalist for Innovation, and 2013 ComputerWorld Honors Laureate for Innovation.
